Megan’s advice: How to organize or attend large gatherings

Grilling season is upon us, and that means big gatherings with family and friends. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, barbecues are going on all the time. Although they should be fun and memorable, group events can present a big challenge when your family is dealing with food allergies.

Luckily, in this episode of Allergic Living’s “Megan’s Minute” video series, allergy mom Megan Lavin is here with some creative solutions to staying safe – while enjoying the holiday.

In the video, the blogger known for, focuses on two main areas: throwing the big party and attending a big gathering.

1. Organize the barbecue

In the video, Megan plans to throw the party. This is optimal for controlling the food served. Megan covers:

• Its two main menus to prepare, which save time and prevent accommodation from becoming a chore.
• Manage issues like dairy-free butter and gluten-free buns.
• Simplify sides and snacks.
• Fun and easy menu idea: the taco bar.
• Dessert: In the summer, fruit can be your friend.

2. Attend a rally

Megan also discusses the importance of having trusted family members or friends who can take turns hosting. In the video, she covers:

• What to bring – hint: lots of safe sides.
• How to work with a close friend or relative as a host.
• How to use their non-contact cross grill.

As Megan says, “If you’re the host, it’s a lot of work – cleaning up before and after. That’s why it’s nice to find your own tribe, those who are willing to work with you. Then, the ownership of the accommodation is not always up to you.

But she also explains that it’s a process, and if you haven’t reached the stage of having people you can trust to be specific about the allergens you’re avoiding, then she suggests d other ways they can help you when you’re the host.

This video will help inspire and empower you. Even with multiple food allergies, like those of Megan’s two boys, it’s entirely possible to throw or attend a big party.
