MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University honors military service throughout the year. In recognition of Veterans Day, WIU will be hosting military appreciation activities from Saturday October 30 through Thursday November 11.
Attendees of any University sponsored event or facility should be vaccinated, and all staff, faculty, students, and guests are required to wear face coverings in all indoor campus environments.
Saturday October 30 – from 8:30 a.m.
Fallen soldier 5 km run / walk
Each year, the University hosts the Fallen Soldiers 5K to raise funds for the WIU Fallen Soldiers Scholarship Fund, which supports veterans and military personnel currently enrolled in Western. Prior to the race, a special program is held to honor our fallen soldiers for whom the scholarship has been established and to recognize current scholarship recipients. More information on how you can honor veterans and participate in the 5K run / walk can be found at wiu.edu/fallensoldiers.

As we head into the holiday season, WIU wants to recognize deployed and activated students and alumni. The Alumni House will be open from noon to 3 p.m. for the WIU community to help assemble packages that will be mailed to active duty students and alumni. WIU World War I and WWII veterans contributed to the University’s rich heritage, including our symbols, traditions, and commitment to inclusion. Cory Booher, Marine Corps veteran and current president of the WIU Veterans Club, will share a presentation commemorating the military accomplishments of Colonel Raymond “Rock” Hanson.

Students of military service will discuss how their military experiences have shaped them as individuals and as students. This event is organized by the Veterans Club and the WIU ROTC.

The Battle of the Branches Bench Press Competition
Leisure on campus
Veterans and military personnel will have a bench press competition at the Spencer Student Recreation Center. The winning branch will have a trophy or plaque with the total weight lifted and the branch name displayed in the Recreation Center. To schedule a time, contact Nick Knowles at [email protected]

All-Star Tug of war
Leisure on campus
In recognition of Colonel Rock Hanson’s contributions to WIU, Campus Recreation will host the All-Star Tug of War, in honor of Colonel Rock Hanson. Teams of four will compete outdoors wearing masks. The event is free for student teams from campus departments, residence floors, classrooms and student organizations. The winning team will be rewarded with a trophy hosted at Campus Recreation. Flags of love
The recognition begins with the putting up of love flags by volunteers at 7 a.m. in Chandler Park on Veterans Day, Thursday, November 11. The flags will be removed at 5 p.m. the same day.

Military tribute ceremony

The ceremony will honor veterans and military personnel. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will take place in the Sherman Hall auditorium on the third floor.

Veterans Appreciation Concert

The WIU School of Music will present a special Veterans Appreciation Concert at 7:30 p.m. on November 11 in the COFAC Recital Hall. The concert is presented by the Wind Ensemble, conducted by Mike Fansler, with guest singer Alphonzo Cooper, Jr. Participation in the hall will be limited to 100 spectators; those interested can book free tickets the week before the event by contacting Joanie Herbert at [email protected] The concert will also be broadcast live so that people back home can join.
WIU Athletics will also honor the veterans in Saturday’s football game between the Leathernecks and Illinois State University at Hanson Field.
