After an unconventional celebration during the 2020-21 school year, Winter Frolic Week returns to Ely High School with a more traditional celebration.
The annual mid-winter and mid-school year event took place last year, but amid Covid-19 restrictions that cut many of the usual festivities – including dancing.
That’s not the case this year and the mid-school monotony will be broken up with a series of old-fashioned events and entertainment in the works as students celebrate the season.
With the bulk of the events gearing up, the celebration has already begun with a pep rally that took place at the end of the school day on Friday – including the announcement of the candidates for Winter Frolic royalty.
Hallway decorating follows Sunday, setting the stage for dress-up days, home sporting events, pep parties and a dance.
This year’s king and queen will be crowned at a pep rally scheduled for Tuesday at 10 a.m. This event will also include various games and a performance by the Ely High School Dance Team.
Another pep rally is in the works Friday at the start of the school day, including recognition of high school academic award winners and members of the National Honor Society.
Student fancy dress days are held throughout the week with the following themes: Sport Jersey (Monday), Timber (Tuesday), Vacation (Wednesday), Decade (Thursday) and Extreme Red and White (Friday).
Many home sporting events take place during the week, with women’s basketball on Monday, a home ski meet and hockey game on Thursday, and a men’s basketball game on Friday night.
The week will be capped off this Saturday with the semi-formal Winter Frolic dance, which will take place from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., at the high school gymnasium.
