World Consumer Rights Day 2022: History, Meaning, Activities
World Consumer Rights Day will be celebrated on March 15 primarily to raise awareness of consumer rights. One of the purposes of celebrating this day is to protect clients from abuses and social injustices that undermine their rights.

The consumer movement celebrates World Consumer Rights Day on March 15 every year, as a way to raise global awareness of consumer rights and needs. Celebrating this day is an opportunity to demand that the rights of all consumers be respected and protected, and to protest against market abuses and social injustices that undermine these rights.
History of World Consumer Rights Day:
President John F Kennedy sent a special message to the US Congress on March 15, 1962, in which he formally addressed the issue of consumer rights. Inspired by his speech on March 15, 1983, the first World Consumer Rights Day was celebrated. Now, each year it is celebrated to mobilize action on issues and campaigns that matter to consumers.
Theme for World Consumer Rights Day:
Members of Consumers International, some 200 consumer groups in 100 countries, have chosen “Fair Digital Finance” as their global theme.
Consumer Rights in India
In India, the consumer rights movement was launched in 1966 in Maharashtra. Grahak Panchayat was established in Pune in 1974. Other states also started forming several institutions to help consumers. On December 9, 1986, the Consumer Protection Act was passed in Parliament with the aim of empowering consumers. The law gave various rights and a boost to consumer councils, forums and courts of appeal for settling consumer grievances.
